Prediction: Star Wars, Episode VII
Shiri: I have to admit, scarred by the prequels as so many of us original trilogy kids are, I was planning on avoiding the new trilogy completely. Then, the kids got into the universe and I saw the first snippets of footage and I started to get excited against my better judgement…
I’m still excited. I’m avoiding theories and spoilers because I’d like to remain excited. Though my theory on the absence of anything except Luke’s back and glove is: marketing. People will talk about it ad nauseum until December 18th. As though there could be any more hype, which makes it all a bit silly, but this is how things are done, I suppose.
And damn, is it pretty.
My one concern is the lack of Leia, though that hug… that hug, kids. Crossing fingers she’s got a sweet storyline with which JJ wants to surprise us.
In all, yeah. I’m all in.
Luke: Someone complained that since the preview premiered during Monday night football and not Agents of S.H.E.I.LD. it was not for us (us being geeks I assume, though why non-geek would assume that geeks would anything but hate watch Agents…), which is completely true. They could post it on a website, in an incompatible format, with no advanced warning, only in a dead language, guarded by orcs and Star Wars fans would still watch it. They have us by the short and curlys and have no intention of letting go.
But, they want more. Well duh, they want not just the fans, but everyone to go watch. Disney wants this to be THE biggest movie ever, so they are posting it to hit a huge audience. Only makes sense to post it where they did.
I really want to stand on the “Episode 1, I will never forget” bandwagon, but the trailers keep getting better and better. We have storm troopers, the battles of the old movies as legends, a new universe that appears to be f’ed up, and all of the old friends are back. And we have some new villains and heroes. We might even have a new Death Star, if you look at that poster carefully. We have a color scheme and set designs that call back to the original series, then move past it. Everything was spot on.
Basically, what I am saying is GIMMIE A FREAKIN’ BB-8 AND I AM SOOO THERE.
I don’t care where they show a trailer. I don’t care if there are terrible movies in the franchise. I don’t care if fanboys hate it or love it. *I* will see a movie because it hearkens back to my childhood and will make me happy. *I* will see a movie because I enjoy the things that JJ does. *I* will see a movie on opening night because I am flat out crazy. *I* enjoy the experience of being excited and happy and possibly disappointed and whatever other emotions may come because I am a human being and life is meant to be complicated. Just because it’s and SW movie does not automatically make it great or terrible, it makes it a fun experience to have with friends, family, or just a horde of strangers.
