Luke’s Wednesday Recommendation: UTOPIA
What is the best British TV series you have probably never seen? So good David Fincher and HBO have optioned it as a series? So painful taut and twisted, but believable and, in a few places, moving?
UTOPIA:
So, as the trailer said, on its face a comic book, “it’s a graphic novel”, that might tell the story of how the world is going to end. But, that is only part of it. The real story is about how normal (or almost normal in a couple of cases), who get caught up in the wake of this conspiracy, deal with staying alive and fighting back. The conspiracy is creepy and layered, and is reveled in a satisfying way. Though I could live with just the first season, it leaves enough on the table for a second season. Each of the heroes are deeply flawed and interesting characters. Each one finds themselves involved and drawn to this comic for different reasons, and each one grows and changes as they learn to live on the run and chased by a seemingly emotionless killer.
I wish I knew how I found this series, might have been a review up on Bleeding Cool, but it is worth searching out. Neil Maskell’s performance as the dead-eyed killer Arby is chilling.
And the theme music is brilliant, gets stuck in your skull.
