Luke’s Thursday Review: Summer Binge Recommendations
Summer is made for binging on TV. The giant scare ball is out all day, and even in the evening it too hot to move further than to the kitchen for another beverage. So, let you inner couch spud out and BINGE!
Here are two recommendations on great binge choices.
If you want a show that manages to pull in some of the good parts of what made Lost fun, let me recommend Under The Dome. Based on a novel by Stephen King, developed for TV by Brian K. Vaughan (of Y: the last man, Ex Machina and Saga fame). And is just about the only summer show I have seen so far this year worth a damn. A mysterious dome has dropped over a small town and the towns people have to avoid the dome or each other killing each other while they ponder the question of the nature of the dome. Instead of the lame Jack vs. Locke plots, the question of is the dome driven by science or conscious, with wants and needs, impact every action the people trapped in the dome take. Second season just started and the first one is available in the normal places. In the second season they have upped the stakes and after the first episode, it does not seem any character is safe.
Another good binge choice would Brooklyn Nine Nine, or how I learned to not hate Andy Samberg and actually laugh at him. I could not bring myself to watch this show, mainly because I could not stand the idea of watching a show where Andy Samberg was the main character. But, after the reviews started to come in I had to give it a chance. Instead of reining him in, the show has given him a space where his manic crazy is subdued compared to the other insane characters around him and some how he comes across as sympathetic. Andre Braugher is a stand out as the captain, but my favorite is Chelsea Peretti as the demented Gina.
