That Which We Are Reading
Shiri: Just finished Shovel Ready by Adam Sternbergh (2014) and it is on the “highly recommend” list. The style is innovative and minimalist, very slick without being pretentious. May take a little getting used to but definitely worth the initial brain spasms. Moved in to The Guts by Roddy Doyle (2014) to whom I never say no, especially when his new books are intended as extensions of the Barrytown Trilogy. Whole books written in dialect usually give me writer-rage but Doyle’s prose is flawless and carefully considered and his dialogue always reminds me of the six months I spent studying in Dublin I regret not turning into a forever thing.
Luke: Enjoying I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. Which I am shocked that I had never gotten around to reading (it is considered one of the first zombie novels {even though the zombies are vampires}). Very good so far, and I beginning to understand why people who love the novel don’t consider any of the film adaptations to do it justice.
Off in comic land, I am enjoying two of Marvel’s willingness to allow creators to do some pretty off-beat titles, I am thinking of Hawkeye, FF/Fantastic Four and Young Avengers. If you like comics they are a breath of fresh air. If you don’t like comics they are great examples of what the medium can do, and might help you to understand why there are those of us who do love comics so.
