On Luke’s Audio Device This Week: 2015-09-09 edition
The wrong path to get to the right place. This weekend the wife mentioned an episode of Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me that had made her laugh. It included a question, one that made light of her geeky husband, about a super-hero themed gym. I went looking for it, but ended up looking though the recent episodes of This American Life, both broadcast on NPR, but clearly not the same show. Instead, I found an episode about William S. Burroughs. Now, not an inconsiderable amount of time has been spent by myself acquiring and consuming many of that man’s works. And, though I hold no academic sanctions in the area, I do consider myself to be an armchair Burroughs scholar, if not motivated fan. Anyway, continuing on listening to this radio documentary was edifying. A great overview, warts and all, of a literary figure who also lived on as a caricature of his own works in many way. Narrated, presented in the parlance of our British cousins where the show was made for BBC4, by Iggy Pop, the documentary includes academics, John Waters, and Will Self among others talking about Uncle Bill and his influence on them.
Whether or not you know mugwumps from Dr. Benway or not, worth a listen.
