Prediction: Zero Theorem
Shiri’s Prediction: Terry Gilliam’s weird is my kind of weird. I would love to understand it, but I certainly don’t need to in order to appreciate what the man is doing. He’s a bloody genius at creeping into your brain with incredible contrasts (visual, audio, moral) between light and dark, color and monochrome and staying you there and making you think, the data bits coming together in a massive existential crisis weeks, or months, later. Zero Theorem, from both the trailer and the preview article I read in SciFi Now, seems to have a bit more of a single focus plot, which is a departure but one I can only anticipate with glee — if Gilliam can do what he’s done with such diffuse plot lines in the past, imagine what he can do with a single line of inquiry. The colors are all there, the odd outfits. The nudity I can never unsee. A black hole. I’m excited for this one and I’m sure Luke and I will be talking about it on the podcast.
Luke’s Prediction: Really hard to go wrong with anything this man has done. I mean he is the one who managed to film Fear and Loathing, and as long as we don’t talk about the Brothers Grimm has not made a stinker. Now the only one concern I have is that it feels like we have been here before. I see a lot of Brazil in that preview, and worry that he might be retreading the same path, not that it is a bad path or one that still has value in revisiting, but there are some people who you just expect more from. And given the amazing movies he has made in the past those expectations can be high.
