Tuesday Prediction: Crimson Peak
Shiri: I am not, typically, a straight up horror fan. Mostly because I have an overactive imagination (duh, writer) and anything that’s set in the “real” world (yes, I know it’s not real real) leaves me checking corners and closets and sleeping with the lights on for days because my brain plays with the shadows or the house creaks or the cat meowing.
Guillermo del Toro horror is something else entirely however, because it’s… gorgeous and gothic and there’s a story to it. Always something primal and visceral but executed as an art form that doesn’t kidnap my rationality. Oh, it still scares the hell out of me, but in a way I can enjoy because I can remain just on this side of separate, just on this side of looking at a beloved painting, without being completely lost in it. The man directs like the Platonic ideal of a director and his casting is always perfect. I find his aesthetic suits my brain pan perfectly even when I’m not so into a given film (I loved watching Pacific Rim though I didn’t love the movie itself) and the moral ambiguity of so many of his characters fascinating.
Also, Tom Hiddleston says he decided to show his butt for feminism. So, mostly Guillermo del Torro, but a little bit Hiddlebutt. Like, 95/5. Maybe 90/10
Luke: I like good horror movies. I love good horror movies with a twist. I like what I have seen of Mr. del Toro’s movies. But, this preview is a hot mess. Between this one and the previous trailer I have less of an idea of what is going on than before I started.
Anyway, I do note that the writing credits list that del Toro and Matthew Robbins share the ‘written by’ credit (reuniting the team that brought us Mimic, no really) which means they both wrote both the story and the screenplay. This means the movies succeeds or fails entirely on Guillermo’s shoulders.
It looks pretty and has an amazing cast (love me that Mr. Hunnam), and has an amazing look. And even with some Hiddlebutt, I am there. Though I might wait for late night on premium cable, not gonna run out for the theatres on this one.
