Get To Know a Hero: Ms. Marvel (current)
Yes, I have been reading this comic since #1. Refresher info, as always, from the official Marvel Wiki. As always, I beg you not to shoot the messenger.
Alias: Kamala Khan
Born: Jersey City, NJ
First Appearance: Captain Marvel, Volume 7, #14 (2013)
First Solo Appearance: Ms. Marvel #1 (2014)
Powers/Abilities: morphogenesis, accelerated healing, bioluminescence
The Story:
Kamala’s latent Inhuman abilities are triggered when she is enveloped in Terrigen Mist released by Blackbolt. Her heroine, Carol Danvers (former Ms., and now Captain Marvel) appears to Kamala while she’s unconscious after the attack and asks Kamala what she wants to be. Always uneasy with herself, feeling as though her interests don’t match with her culture, Kamala answers, “I want to be you.”
Put in several situations in which people need her help, Kamala instinctively morphs into Carol Danvers. Realizing, eventually, that while she does want to be a hero, she wants to be her own kind of said, she, with the help of her friend Bruno, creates a new Ms. Marvel costume that suits her needs, her culture, and her personality. Though finding it difficult to reconcile her new life with her place in a traditional Pakastani family, Kamala gradually finds a way to live both as Kamala and as Ms. Marvel.
Kamala has several run-ins with The Inventor during one of which she teams up with Wolverine (one of the last team-ups before his death) to battle sewer alligators and save runaway X-Student Julie Harrison.
Wolverine recognizes the Inhuman in Kamala, though she herself hasn’t yet put a name to her transformation, and contacts Medusa, who promises to watch the new hero and who sends Lockjaw the Inhuman dog to watch the girl’s back. Fighting The Inventor again, Kamala is injured past the point her regenerative capabilities can handle; Medusa, alerted by Lockjaw, brings Kamala to the Inhuman hang out where Kamala is healed and the origin of her abilities explained.
More recently, Kamala has battled Inhumans taking a page from Magneto’s book and fought with Captain Marvel to save the residents of Jersey City against the chaos being wrought by the Secret Wars.
I wish there were more, but she’s young yet and anticipate great things in Kamala Khan’s future.
