Preview: Preacher
Shiri: I didn’t read Preacher, though I may have Jon pull it out for me not or go rooting around for cheap trades. The hubs did and he really loved it; he’s not sure how he feels about the upcoming. From the background he’s given me and the trailer, I think it’s going to be pretty good though I’m hoping for a little more supernatural than what’s shown in the brief presentation here. I’m sort of over TV right now, but I can see Preacher pulling me back in once a week. Then again, I do like my comic-book properties on the darker side. Not sure what that says about me, but give me something like this over Supergirl any day…
Luke: I have two uncomfortable things that I have to admit. These are some truly bearing my soul sorts of things. I don’t like Preacher. I really want to, I loved Garth Ennis when he was on Hellblazer. In many ways I think he might be the Quintin Tarantino of comic books, and if that is true, then for me Preacher is his Jackie Brown. A work just dripping with potential that always leaves you completely dissatisfied. I will give it another try, but I have never completed it.
I am a huge Vertigo fan, so admitting I don’t like Preacher is a betrayal of epic sorts. But, it just does not work for me.
On the other hand I am going to watch the fuck out of this series.
And, then we have my second admission: I watch some truly awful things just because one actor or writer I love worked on a movie or a show. Started when I was young, the number of truly horrid Michael Ironside or Rutger Hauer movies I saw will stay with me for the rest of my life. In Preacher we have two actors I would watch the show for on a good day: Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark from Agent Carter) and Ruth Negga (Raina aka the girl in the flowered dresses from Agents of SHEILD). Both are fun in those series, and were enough for me to buy in.
BUT, the kicker is Joseph Gilgun. And shame on you for not having watched Misfits, if you don’t know who I am talking about. Misfits is the best TV show that should have been a Vertigo comic. Imagine a Heroes (the bad TV show) that first did not suck and second off was set in and around a community center in a bad London neighborhood where all the heroes are various sundry character on community service. Trust me not only does it work, but it was pretty damn good. Has some low spots, but Joseph Gilgun shines. I watched Lockout just because he was in it. I don’t think anyone is prepared for how much fun he is going to have with Cassidy.
