Prediction: The X-Files
Shiri: When I first heard there was going to be a continuation of The X-Files, I gave zero fucks. I stuck with it longer than most shows I eventually give up on, but as I recall, the last couple of seasons were just a bit too… much and I’ve barely thought about the show since with the exception of the time I wasted watching the movie and… oh, wait; there were two movies? Yeah, I didn’t even see the second one.
Then, I saw this new trailer and, against my better judgment, I got excited. This is the format X-Files is intended to be viewed in. These are the slightly psycho Mulder and skeptical Scully I fell in love with as a *much* younger adult. Maybe it genuinely looks good or maybe I’m just feeling nostalgic, but I will be watching and I do have some expectation of decency.
Don’t let me down, old friends.
Luke: There are some who would argue that the golden age of TV we are now enjoying began with the X-Files (they would be wrong it was Twin Peaks, which set the stage for the X-Files). That long saga driven TV began with this show. The popularization of shows with both the standalone and ‘mythos’ episodes can be traced back here.
And there we have the problem. Think back to the best episodes of the X-Files. The demon episode with Bruce Campbell or the old guy who could see how you were going to die. Or any of the other great ones. What is the common thread? Standalone episodes. Not the saga or mythos ones. The one and done one were the best. From this preview it looks wall to wall mythos. All aliens, all the time. Blah, blah, blah alien cakes.
This revival, unless the preview is lying will be relegated to the waste bin right next to the movies to be forgotten as a footnote.
Sorry not much hope in my book. But it will be pretty.
