What is on my audio device this week: The Velvet Underground’s The Velvet Underground and Nico (33 1/3 Series)
The 33 1/3 Series is for hardcore music nerds. Each of the books, there are 116 books in the series as of this post, ostensibly is about a single album and tries to add something to what has already been written about that album or band. Each book takes a different tack, the David Bowie Low book was as much about the albums before it and after it, and how Bowied ended up where he was when the album was made, and then an in depth look at each track. The Pogues Rum Sodomy and the Lash is in the form of a story, a completely fictional story that weaves together elements of the band and the album, but does not really touch at all on the actual details of either.
This one is a bit more on the analysis side of the dial. The first part has lots of details about how, and who, and where, and when this seminal band came to exist and the album was made. The second part goes into great depth on each song.
Sort of the same fascination that drives wanting to see how other authors write, seeing any type of creative person or persons work is one of the best parts of this series. Will one more detail actually help you understand how they made it? Maybe, maybe not, but I do find something new and interesting in every album and band I have read or heard one of the books from this series covers.
Recommended.
