What is on my nightstand this week: The Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
Even though I have read and seen any number of critiques and references to this book, I have actually never sat down and read it from end to end. The critiques have usually focused on its flaws once you start trying to claim universality, and trying to apply to it all possible myths, especially non-western myths.
But, that is not really my interest in it, instead I am interested in its influence on storytelling. I keep seeing books and essays refencing back to this book. If finally reached that point and I put it on my short list of things to read next.
Overall, it is everything you would want from a good text book, dense but engaging. Interesting, and packed with ideas.
