What is on my pull-list this week (comics): The Invisibles (1994-2000)
Surprising, but I have never read The Invisibles from beginning to end. I had read some of the issues, maybe a collection here or there, but I had never given Grant Morrison’s Vertigo epic a real end to end read. Especially after having recently read The British Invasion, a book that looks at Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman and the aforementioned Mr. Morrison. I have enjoyed most everything by the other two comic writers, and have read a good amount of Morrison’s stuff as well. Just not The Invisibles.
What the hell was I thinking?
The whole series revolves around a group who are part of a larger resistance against shadowy invaders from another reality. But, they are fighting back using magick, and altering reality themselves. Or it might all be just an excuse for Grant Morrison to throw together as many bits of literature, history, counterculture, and magick as he can into every issue, to a point where you wonder if anyone, even Morrison himself gets all of the allusions.
Either way, it is a wild read and even with all of the good and bad crazy, it has a plot that rips along, once it gets going. (The first couple of issues drag along a bit.)
TL;DR: highly recommended.
