Prediction: Days of Future Past
Shiri’s Prediction: Stewart! McKellan! McEvoy! Fassbender! Jackman! Lawrence! Despite the mostly sausage-fest nature of the cast (don’t like Halle Berry as Storm, never have, never will) I found my heart rate speeding up during the freakin’ trailer and how often does that happen? Nor has my excitement diminished with successive viewings. And there have been a lot of them. I have hopes. Many and high. And yet… the closing line of the two plus minute preview has me expecting the worst. “We need you to hope again?” *retch* Even coming in the distinctive and holy voice/accent of Sir Patrick. I’ll go. If not opening weekend, pretty close. I will spend some of my precious, movie-out time on this film. I plan, however, to bring an umbrella. As a precaution. Because I don’t want to drown in tidal wave of spray cheese.
Luke’s Prediction: This is not your father’s Days of Future Past! But, it is. From the preview, it looks like they took the soul of the Days of Future Past storyline and turned the angst up to 11. The reconciling of the decent X-Men First Class and the amazing Bryan Singer X-Men (and sorta X-Men 2) through this story line is genius. Both an interesting idea and a great chance to see all of those actors together. The cross-time stories of the X-Men begin and end at Days of Future Past, in my opinion, and this looks like it keeps the best and most coherent parts while abandoning some of the less great parts (the Kitty Pryde, one of my favorite X-Men, bits in the comics especially durning this story always bugged me). And Peter Dinklage as Trask is brilliant.
Though, three things did cause me some concern. One, there was a shot of an X-Men that bore a strong resemblance to Bishop, this is bad. Just say no to 90’s era bad boy X-Men (e.g. Bishop, Cable, Deadpool, etc.) And why do they continue to have Halle Berry as Storm? It should have been and still should be Angela Basset in that role. If you think I am wrong I would point you to the 3rd season of American Horror Story. (Just a quick refresher on Storm, she was a pick pocket and a thief who lived most of her life on her wits alone, then she became a de facto goddess, and all of this before she was an X-Man. Now, for even on second could you see Halle Berry as both a thief and a goddess? Right. And who do you see pulling off a leather vest and a freakin’ mohawk?) And where are the Sentinels? Now, I understand giant mutant killing robots might be expensive and difficult to pull off well, but please don’t let them pull a Starship Troopers (dropping a major part of the plot because of complexity and leaving a gutted and hollow story behind).
