Jason Isbell: Southwestern (2013).  Country but not too country… really more bluegrassy.  Which is what I always say instead of admitting I like a country artist.  This ain’t your dog and your truck though, kids, this is some serious shit, some hilarious, some beautiful, some painful, but always brutally honest.  Like Steve Earle?  You will like Jason Isbell.

Amanda Shires: Down Fell the Doves (2013).  Incidentally, married to Jason Isbell, I discovered them when the were interviewed together on World Cafe.  A little blues, a little country (BLUEGRASS, DAMN IT), a little punk, crazy listenable.  She has an amazing voice and I believe does the fiddle bits as well.  She also sings on Isbell’s album and he on hers.

Incidentally, when I did the Amazon search for the link, these two albums are “Frequently Purchased Together,” along with Roseanne Cash’s The River & The Thread, which I mentioned a few weeks ago and am still listening to quite frequently.
