Shiri is Sentenced: 5-11-14 Edition
Just started this book yesterday and it was blowing me away by page 34. How did I miss this one? How? *shakes fist at universe*
Traditional Indian, novel, prose style + speculative fiction? *Happy dance* This combination doesn’t happen nearly often enough. It absolutely begs for epic, layered, and complex in the best possible ways.
For several reasons, I’ve been thinking about cultural relativism quite a bit of late. The following is one of the most lovely, humorous, succinct, slap-one-in-the-face manner in which I’ve ever seen it portrayed. The image of said that will live in my head in perpetuity, the example I will use if ever asked to define the comcept.
Page 35 (2006 hardcover edition), first paragraph, beginning line 1:
“His school of Islam is refined, intensley civilized, ecstatic and mystical. It is no painted day-glo pink. It does not wave its penis around in public.”
About sums the concept up, no?
(Note: not a dig at Islam; character’s own comparision between the majority and himself. He’s sort of a snob.)
