That which Luke is reading…
This one is a bit out of my wheelhouse, but I enjoyed hearing the author talk about writing on the Writing Excuses (here) podcast and it had been added to our list of books to review on our podcast (We have a podcast, called Last Chance Salon, you can find it on iTunes or right here on this website, just saying.), so I picked it up from the amazing Boston Public Library website. Which, as a side note, the Minuteman Library system should take a look at. There is something wrong; read: broken, awful, or just does not work; with the search on the Minuteman digital catalog. It really sucks. Boston is a lovely website to use. And as a resident of Mass. I get access. Woot. But, the book in question is Shades of Milk and Honey (here) by Mary Robinette Kowal.
The book is like a Jane Austen novel with just a hint of magic. Rather than spending all their time sewing or talking about dresses, the women (and mostly women so far, with some notable exceptions) also manipulate glamours to add motions to paintings or turn musical performances into multimedia experiences. It is all very well done, captures the spirit of Jane Austen’s style quite well, but not being my go to author of that period, it may stay a bit too close to her style. (I would prefer something a bit more on the comedy end of what I think of as manners pieces {works mainly focused on those who live in the absurd world of english manners}, so Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest or Sheridan’s The Rivals) It is enjoyable and well written. But, might not be for me. Though, it might have a twist and there are a few characters I would like to know and see a bit more about, so it has got its claws in me a bit.
And no comic this week. I think I am going to make comics part of my weekly post of reviews. Go a little more in depth on them.
