Shiri’s Top Ten Books of the Year
Mind, these were not necessarily published in 2014, but they all entered my eyeholes in 2014. And if I read the sum total, or sum total thus far, of a series, it counts as a single entry. What? My list, my rules.
Choosing a favorite from this list is a challenge but, were I to do so, my absolute #1 is:
The Imperial Radch Series (to date Ancillary Justice and Ancillary Sword) by Ann Leckie (sentient AIs, intrigue, and revenge, oh my)
The remainder, in no particular order, are:
The Martian by Andy Weir (science! adventure! space!)
The Glamourist Histories by Mary Robinette Kowal (Jane Austen with a hint of polite, appropriate magic)
Audition by Ryu Murakami (so… creepy)
Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932 by Francine Prowse (Spies! Sexual politics! Nazis!)
All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka (time loops, aliens, and the Full Metal Bitch)
The Belle Dame Apocrypha by Kameron Hurley (Bad ass assassins, carnivorous deserts, hella weapons, and bugs)
Traitor’s Blade by Sebastien de Castel (Dumas meets high fantasy. Now with more snark and death saints!)
Carsick by John Waters (It’s John Waters. Who cares what it’s about?)
The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell (Jesuits! In! Space!)
Honorable mentions to:
Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson (mythology, the Middle East, and magic)
The Clockwork Dagger by Beth Cato (Steampunk that is what steampunk should be; a phenomenal story with elements as appropriate)
The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell (just read it)
