Currently Entering Shiri’s Eyeholes: Dreamsnake
In my quest to explore the classics, I’ve spent the majority of my time partaking in the sci-fi sausage fest because, well, that’s what there is. Imagine my joy, then, upon discovering the 1978 (the year of my birth. Coincidence? I think not) Hugo and Nebula award winner was a novel titled Dreamsnake, written by Vonda McIntyre (author of the recently read, reviewed, and heartily enjoyed The Sun and the Moon) and featuring a female main character.
It is now in my hands. I’m a little scared.
I suppose the high 70s cover art (*shudder*) is no one’s fault but the publisher’s (way to go, Hough Mifflin) and suggests that the library has, in fact, had this very copy since 1978.
The synopsis sounds is a bit Clan of the Cave Bear meets The Mists of Avalon meets Lord of the Rings with some time travel thrown in. I find this to be an utterly terrifying combination. The jacket also states, and I quote (which you can probably tell from the quotation marks), “Vonda McIntyre’s book is one of a growing number of sf novels that reach the field’s widening audience of women readers.” No, I am not kidding. I am now wondering if I have chosen to spend time with the Always commercial of sic-fi books. Guess we’ll find out.
Hopefully, this is all very misleading and intended to snag an audience.
If nothing else, at least it’s short.
