Prediction: The Martian
Shiri: I was nervous. Because The Flipping Martian. It was an incredible book and it is often impossible to adapt incredible books to screen and do them any sort of justice. It is an ancient clarion call: THE BOOK WAS BETTER.
The book may still be better, but I predict this is going to be a damn fine film maintaining the spirit and integrity of the story and, hopefully, at least some of the science-y bits. I had my doubts about casting a big name, in this case Matt Damon, as Mark Watney, but I am now convinced and the rest of said seems spot on.
I have gone from dubious to damn excited.
Luke: At first Matt Damon seemed like a strange choice, kind of odd to think of Jason Bourne as Mark Watney. But, then the first preview dropped. This is Matt Damon is full on lovable mode, the everyman that he can do so well. The wannabe from Ocean’s Eleven would be the closest role I could name off hand. And this made me think the movie was going to be OK.
Then the interview previews dropped. You got the ‘Aquaman/Whale’ question and the response from the captain in her interview delivers the best response to an ‘as a woman, how do you feel’ type question ever.
I am going to see this one opening weekend.
