Entering Shiri’s Eyeholes: Crooked by Austin Grossman
It’s been a while since I read any real alt. history. And by a while I mean the last such novel I remember is Guns of the South. I’m sure at least a couple of like-genre bits have been input since 1992 but I have no idea what they are or what they might have been about.
I like the idea of playing with the Nixon era specifically. Dude may have been a crook despite protestations but his blown judgment call (and yes, it was a massive one) tends to precipitate an overlooking of the facts that he: opened relations with China (Old Vulcan Proverb case in point), deescalated the Cold War, withdrew American troops from Vietnam, helped to pass sweeping environmental reforms, and saw the Apollo program through to the actual moon landing.
Personal politics aside (aka: he’s would have been far too conservative for my tastes had I been alive to vote at the time) he is not the worst president this country has ever had, though history has recorded him as one of the great villains. I appreciate Grossman’s attempts to give him back some, albeit fictional, cred.
I’m only on page 15 and already hooked. I probably would have read straight through last night if the past couple no-sleep weeks hadn’t caught up with me. I anticipate a quick read and I’ll add it to my review list for an upcoming Monday.
