What is on my audio device this week: The West Wing Weekly
If you have never watched all of the Aaron Sorkin episodes of the West Wing, this is not the podcast for you. Go watch the first four seasons instead. On the other hand, if you have your favorite episodes, characters, and even arcs, then I have a podcast for you.
Hosted by Joshua Malina (Sports Night, The West Wing) and Hrishikesh Hirway (of the Song Exploder podcast), each episode they delve into a single episode in amazing depth. They cover the show from not just the angle of the episode itself, but put the episode in context of what was happen behind the scenes, in the real White House at the time, and even flubs you might missed. And, though the hosts can geek out, maybe over geek out, and end up in interesting places, the guests are what make the show. Dule Hall (Charlie), Janel Moloney (Donna), and even Aaron Sorkin himself.
Long form shows like the West Wing are incredible when they are as good as this show was, especially for as long as it was so, so good. Hearing about how this show was made, especially given how much of the show was resting on the amazing writing. The acting elevated the show to another level, and covered up for some lapses here and there, but the writing is at the heart of this show.
So, if you can’t rewatch the show at work, this podcast will tide you over until you can.
