What is on my nightstand this week:
Down These Strange Streets, edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois
The library had this one out on a display when it caught my eye, “all new stories of urban fantasy” and edited by George R. R. Martin, well OK. Not too far in, but the selection of authors is interesting and at least it will give me a few people to add to the to-read list.
Groo vs. Conan 1-4 written by Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragonés, art by Sergio Aragonés and Thomas Yeates
A lot of times the ‘blank’ meets ‘blank’ type of stories (like a ‘Batman meets Spider-man’ story) don’t deliver. They don’t really solve any of the pressing questions about who would win in a battle, or such. This series avoids that sort of problem, by not only having Conan and Groo battle for effectively two whole issues, but there is a side/meta story about Sergio Aragonés himself going insane and running around in an opened back hospital gown. Maybe not the best introduction to Groo, but those who love the misadventures of everyone’s favorite cretin would love this. And the art is quite amazing with Conan being drawn by Thomas Yeates and Groo by Sergio melding in a single panel.
TL;DR: Recommended.
