Entering Shiri’s Eyeholes: The Dragons of Heaven by Alyc Helms
Superheroes. Dragons. Shadows. Guardians. And marial arts masters with anime hair. Oh, and fedoras. Cannot forget the fedora (no joke).
And the very interesting concept of a protagonist stepping into a world that isn’t part of her cultural DNA without the desire to become something she isn’t. Her goal, unlike that of most characters in similar situations, isn’t to appropriate; it’s to understand well enough to save lives.
Think Iron Fist without the need to retcon an explanation of the Caucasian character seeking to penetrate Eastern mysteries because Helms considered the intricacies from go.
I’m about a third of the way in and I’d be done already if I wasn’t fighting an horrific cold and a couple of writing deadlines. Am currently utilizing the library copy but have already preordered the second installment which means I will, at some point, due to the need to own complete series and also because I will likely re-read at least a couple of times, purchase The Dragons of Heaven.
And shout out to Angry Robot. I have yet to be disappointed.
Addendum by Shiri: I sat for two and a half straight hours and finished The Dragons of Heaven last night. You should all be reading the fuck out of it. Like, yesterday.
Full review to follow when I’m not on my way to work.
