Prediction: Macbeth
Shiri: Yes.
Luke: Maybe.
Interesting putting this story into what looks like a historical context, as opposed to resetting in modern times or some generic “castle” as most play versions do. (I will wait for the history geeks to weigh-in on if it actually is accurate.) Seeing Shakespeare presented with a big-budget action movie in the background can be interesting. But, I do worry that the main show of the actors delivering those amazing lines can get overshadowed.
And, as anyone who has ever discussed MacBeth with me can attest, I am not a fan of the vamp/waifish manipulator for Lady MacBeth. I would love to see a version of the play MacBeth with a domineering Lady MacBeth, one who he loves but goes to war just as much to escape as he does for glory. A Lady MacBeth who is as much a force as her husband, maybe more. My dream casting was always a young Angela Lansbury. And if you think I am crazy, go watch the original Manchurian Candidate and tell me that she wouldn’t have been an amazing Lady Macbeth.
That being said, the female lead here is much better than the last movie version I know of, the disastrous Roman Polanski version, and Fassbender looks great as well.
Hesitant yes, definite maybe.
