Now entering my earholes: Lukas 2015.10.17
I am old school, read fuddy-duddy, when it comes to music. I am of the firm belief that the atomic unit of music is the album and not the song. A great band shows their skill in putting together not just a great set of songs, but the order that those songs are presented in. I can see the benefit of ‘expanded’ or ‘special’ editions that add in new tracks, but give me the original album, only the original tracks in the original order.
So, things like Pandora or other internet radio things have never appealed to me, until now. Spotify has managed to crack through my fuddy-duddy armor.
Spotify has had a “radio” feature for a while where you can choose a track or a playlist, then it attempts to choose songs that are somehow related to the chosen track(s). Sadly, their implementation sucked eggs, badly. If you ever thumbed up or thumbed down a track it made it somehow worse. Basically, if you ever looked at the ‘radio’ playlist funny, it would freak out and start playing worse crap.
But, they have something new. A new playlist has popped up in my list of playlists: ‘Discovery Weekly by Spotify’
Through both the listening habits of others and you it generates a new playlist of music for you. And, somehow it freakin’ works!
It gives you bands that you might never have thought of, or heard of. Not always good, but at least interesting and completely inline with what I have been listening to. From it I have found new albums from bands I liked, new bands to listen to, and some strange-assed music I am really enjoying.
From their promo stuff I think you can get it even if you don’t have a paid Spotify account, and it needs two weeks of data before it starts, but it is worth a try.
