Get to know a ?: White Canary
In DC comics history (with the exception of an appearance in the Ame-Comi Girls series) White Canary is a villain. I’m not entirely sure how we got from there to hero status in Legends of Tomorrow. Maybe because in the Arrow–verse she was reborn in the Lazarus Pit? Maybe because birds need a color? White Canary was, however, originally created by Gail Simone (hallowed be her name) so there’s no doubt in my mind she’s kick ass.
Name: unknown
Aliases: Silk Sister
Affiliations: Twelve Brothers in Silk (who are, in fact, her brothers)
Born: Xi’An, China
First Appearance: Birds of Prey, Vol. 2, Issue #1 (2010)
Abilities: Martial arts, hand to hand combat
The Story:
Powerful martial arts master Huang had himself a tribe of boy warriors to raise so he kept murdered his daughters upon appearance. Charming fellow. As he went to deal the death blow to White Canary, however, lightening struck nearby; Huang took it as a sign and decided to keep her around, though she was raised and trained separate from the Twelve Brothers.
Comes the day her brother are defeated by Black Canary and the Birds of Prey. White Canary feels this defeat besmirches Huang’s name (yup, same guy who was going to murder her back when she was a helpless newborn) and vows revenge on the Birds generally and Black Canary specifically.
She kidnaps Dinah’s daughter, Sin, and holds her hostage in Bangkok, then frames Black Canary for a murder actually done by Lady Siva. She threatens Dinah’s teammates and to expose Dinah’s secret identity of Black Canary doesn’t help her catch the real assassin. After Black Canary kicks White Canary’s ass, the later “offers” to help the former catch Lady Siva.
Turns out this little turnabout is a trap for Black Canary and Lady Siva; White Canary wants the other two women to fight to the death. Why? That is not entirely clear to me, but if you read this run of Birds of Prey and happen to know, that’s what the comments section is for. Huntress challenges Lady Siva in an injured Black Canary’s place allowing Black Canary time to free Sin. Huntress and Siva call off their duel and White Canary is defeated though she does, of course, swear revenge.
