Preview: Agent Carter, season 2
Luke: The world has changed since the end of Agent Carter season 1. Agent Carter was the best of the Marvel TV shows, and in the short list of best comic book TV shows ever. In fact, it was better than any of the DC Cinematic Universe movies (sorry Jon) by miles.
Though, that was all before Marvel and Netflix. I really, really want to be excited about Peggy coming back. But I worry that Peggy cannot hold her own. Not against casual sexism, she kicked that in the ass last season and I expect she will again. Not against proto-supervillians or alien artifacts, again she will rock all of those. No, I worry that Peggy just cannot hold her own against Matt and Jessica. Is there a place for a quaint little spy/comic book story set back in the halcyon days of studio system Hollywood when Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist will dominate TV even though they are never broadcast, just streamed? Maybe.
There is something really great about Peggy Carter and I think the character has something to say, so I hope there is a future for her past.
Shiri: Luke just likes being negative. Peggy can totally hold her own. Peggy is a different sort of character from those who populate Hell’s Kitchen and lives in a very different world than that which is inhabited by the Defenders and that’s a good thing. One of the major complaints regarding the DC properties is the overall darkness and dim view of humanity they evince. And another way in which Marvel is vastly superior vis a vis the visual media is that Marvel can give us well-executed, gritty realism on a Jessica Jones and then throw us into 1940s Hollywood with Agent Carter and crew with equal aplomb and a hell of a lot more positivity. Of course there’s a place for a quaint spy story. There’s always a place for quaint spy stories. I think “little” is a bit insulting considering the fallout from last season, but I’ll let it go this one time. With Jessica and Matt, we see the battle against the worst of humanity. With Peggy, we see the best humanity has to offer. There’s room for both in my viewing time, and I would imagine most of you feel the same way.
Besides, Peggy has single-handedly brought back the wearing of hats.
