That Which We Are Reading
Shiri: Currently immersed in Mary Doria Russell’s Children of
God, sequel to The Sparrow. Perhaps ever so slightly less perfectly executed (the very end of The Sparrow notwithstanding) I slipped right back into the world and re-engaged with the characters as easily as coming come to the company of old friends. I have five more if Ms. Russell’s books in my TBR pile at this very moment (sidebar? I really need to remember the library system has a freeze function.
Also plowed through the first Gotham Central trade paperback. And by plowed through, I mean devoured with aplomb. Luke and I are hitting Gotham Central as a topic in an upcoming episode, so I won’t barf up too many accolades now, but I offer it is most definitely worth a read. Make sure you block out a few hours because you will be physically unable to put it down.
Luke: Looks like this week will be God’s War by Kameron Hurley, which I am just starting. Not quite into it far enough to judge, but the buzz is good on the book. Then I have picked up the latest issue of McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern, titled Hitchcock and Bradbury Fistfight in Heaven. Has some classic stories and some new, and I always love the point where literature and genre fiction meet. Then, I picked up the latest Weird Fiction Review, enjoyed their website and decided to give the journal a gander.
On the comics end, enjoying the Indestructible Hulk by Mark Waid, always fun to see something done with the Hulk that is new and interesting. Rather than being on the run from the government, Banner made a deal with SHEILD. In return for using the Hulk as a WMD, SHEILD gives Banner a lab and resources. Fun action and some hints of a more complex game being played make for a pretty fun run so far.
