WHAT IS ON MY NIGHTSTAND THIS WEEK: Endings and Beginnings
Heaven’s Queen by Rachel Bach
Finishing up this series. A fun read, with power armor, invading alien monsters, human monsters, and a bit human and alien politics. I came for the power armor, but have got swept up in the story. And it continues to have enough surprises that I really don’t know exactly how it is going to end.
Working on finishing up a number of series I have started by not yet completed.
TL;DR review: Recommended
Wild Cards, book 1 edited by George R. R. Martin
Seems like everyone has been talking about these books again, and I had not re-read them in a long time. So, I dug out all my copies and have delved back into this great shared universe. For those who have not read them, Wild Cards is a sprawling (23 books, across at least three publishers) series set in an alternative world where super-heroes are real. It might sound a bit silly, and it is in places, but the authors that Martin has worked with over the years has made the series amazing (it does have its low points, ‘jumpers’ for one), but when it works, they are spectacular.
Started reading these, gods maybe when they came out, or soon after. Anyway, I smirk at the nerd rage about the length between Song of Fire and Ice novels and how the TV show and other things keep distracting Martin from working on those novels. I smirk, because I did not read the Song of Fire and Ice novels for a long time because they were taking Martin away from working on more Wild Cards books.
Re-reading these is like sitting down with old friends. Though, like any good work, I am noticing new and interesting parts of the stories. And some warts here and there, but loving every moment.
TL;DR review: Recommended, all of them, read them now!?!
