Prediction: Europa Report
Shiri’s Prediction: Gave me the Event Horizon jeebies, which I actually count as a good thing. And, science! See, kids, you can make things “realistic” and have a suspenseful, terrifying story as well! I never did see Gravity, mostly because I heard the dialogue was terrible and because the idea of Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as astronauts did me in (yes, I know. They’re actors. What can I say, I am, occasionally, a bit of a literalist). Here’s hoping Europa Report fixes the dialogue issue. I’m a fan of using less- or unknown actors, especially in an ensemble cast, so that’s a bonus and they didn’t go with the obvious choice of Mars for the destination, which, while far away, isn’t quite as far into the void as Jupiter’s moons. The deeper the space, the more catastrophic the failure, after all. I’ll wait to hear what Neil deGrasse Tyson thinks before I get a babysitter; hopefully, everything in this flick rotates the right direction.
Luke’s Prediction: Really strange that in a week where I just finished the Martian, a book based in fact about space travel almost to a fault, that we have two science fiction films that push the boundary right off the edge into horror. Maybe it is just a story of one or more members of a long term space flight going crazy, but it really looks like something under the ice drives them all bug f*ck. Bah, they should just do some fiction about the incredible possible. I still think I might catch this one sooner than later and I do love the fact that I have space movies to choose from. Looks like a good year for space movies.
