That to Which We are Listening
Shiri:
My phone ran out of memory this week, which led to a podcast prioritizing session. I ended up deleting most of them because 1) I needed the space and 2) I really only listen to podcasts on my phone in the car during my 15-20 minute work commute (kids want music and at home, I run off my computer). One that avoided the heave-ho was NPR Books. Why? First, it runs 15-20 minutes, which makes it perfect for the drive to and from the office; a nice, complete package that doesn’t necessitate furtive parking spot completion or having to start all over again because I had to stop in the middle and three weeks later remember I have the rest to listen to. Second, the books are often out of my preferred sub-genres (for lack of a better term) and, therefore, books I would likely never find if NPR didn’t bring them to my attention. I usually end up taking at least one of the 2 books out of the library. Do I always love the books once I start reading? No. Do I sometimes actively dislike them? Yes. Do I sometimes find a fantastic new storyteller I want to beg for even a little bit of her talent? For sure. Whether I end up liking the book or now, however, even starting them is good for my writing and good for the expansion of my repertoire.

Also, this is the only podcast in the world that has me hoping for red lights so I can jot down book names. Because, you know. I can’t replay them when I get home. That would just be redundant…
I am also listening to a lot of Patsy Cline. I caught a WYEP Discumentary about Sentimentally Yours last week and thought, “Hey, it’s been a while since I listened to Patsy Cline. I should do that more.” Yes. I like Patsy Cline. Fuck you and your embarrassing music secret. You only wish you looked half as plastic as that laying on some ugly white pillows in a horrible dress with flammable hair.
