That Which We are Reading
Shiri is reading:
Strange Bodies, Marcel Theroux (2014): I’ll admit I’m not entirely sure where it’s going and the narrative voice is a bit… whingey for my liking, but I’m curious enough to persevere. Because dead people in new bodies but a “sci-fi” classification. In so far as such classifications can be trusted. Because the Russian Mafia is involved and that never ends well for anyone, thus ensuring a satisfying conclusion. Because the prose, despite the whiney bits, is really quite beautiful. Because, as my GoodReads history will show, I have a very difficult time resisting a book that includes the phrase, “in a locked ward of a notorious psychiatric hospital.” I give up too easily these days and, as such books go, this one is relatively short so I’m going to ride it out and hope it pays off.
<addendum by Shiri: It didn’t. Blarg.>
Gotham Central #5: Dead Robin, Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker (2007; date for trade paperback).
The numbering system in the collections threw me a bit, so FYI: the hardcovers and the trade paperbacks have different numbering systems. Trade paperback #4, Corrigan, is split between hardcover collection #3, On the Freak Beat (which is the form in which my library system has it) and Dead Robin (technically trade paperback #5). There is no hardcover #4, and issue 33 is only available as a single issue and not in any of the collections. No, I don’t know why. Yes, I needed help to figure it out. Hush, you.
I’m bummed. Not because the book got any less good. I’m bummed because it got better and I’m almost done. This is one I’m going to close for the last time and sit for a minute, lamenting there isn’t more. I was convinced a Gotham apart from Batman would be dull and lifeless. I was wrong. So, so wrong and I’m very much looking forward to Gotham now that I’ve seen the possibilities. The city has a heart and a soul and that soul is dark.
Can’t wait to see more.
Luke’s Reading List:
So, 19th century conspiracy theory thriller from Mr. Eco. Question is why I have waited so long to read this one. I expect a fun and challenging read. Just started it, so might be on this one for a bit.
There seems to be a lot of love for Mr. Rucka this week on our reading list. This is one of his on going books from Image. It is an interesting post-economic apocalypse thriller. The world is ruled by just a few families that managed to profit off the world collapsing. Interesting world, and it reads like a good spy thriller so far.
