That Which We Are Reading
Shiri is Reading:
by “David Wong” (aka: Jason Pargin) (2007).
Yeah, yeah, I know, this is the movie poster, but it’s also the cover of the copy I have from the library and I like it, so there.
I wasn’t so sure going in; reviews are mixed and this is one people seem to either love or hate. I took the plunge anyway. I am so glad I did. John Dies at the End is exactly what I need after the cubic fuckton of heavy stuff that’s populated in my TBR pile lately. Because it is hilarious. Hilarious, absurd, nonsensical, rational, logical, insane all rolled up into words that have made me howl with glee more than once and I’m not a book laugh-out-louder. I’m about halfway through but even now, I would urge you to pick it up. Read it. Enjoy.
Luke’s Reading List:
Guess what book we are doing for the podcast next week? Yep, John Dies at the End. I saw the movie many moons ago and am happy to say that it captures the spirit of the book. The deranged, completely bonkers, Cronenberg meets Dude Where’s My Car vibe, in every possible good way that could mean. Completely enjoying the madness, it is like visiting some friends who still happen to be back just out of high school.
On the comics front, Red Team by Garth Ennis. Special Unit of the NYPD goes ‘bad’ and becomes a death squad taking out the worst of the worst in criminals that they cannot get the right way. Told as a series of flash backs from the interrogation room of two of the four members, the story flies along as the crew’s decent is shown. And since they are in interrogation rooms and there only appear to be two of them left alive, the whole thing has a taught sense of impending doom. Hope the finish is as good as the first four issues have been.
