Sentenced: The 3-30-14 Edition
Shiri is Sentenced by:
by “David Wong” (2007)
Two different passages from the book so far and I’m only halfway through. I’m going to give ’em to you straight this week and skip the exposition, because anything I add will only dilute the genius and hilarity.
Passage the first:
(page 16, paragraph 7, sentence 3)
“The phrase ‘sodomized by a bratwurst poltergeist’ suddenly flew through my mind.”
Passage the second:
(page 206, paragraph 7, sentence 1&2)
” ‘Ma’am,’ I siad, ‘if your dog was dabbling in the occult while you had her it’s best you tell us now. We’re experts.’ “
Luke’s Sentenced:
From the same book as Shiri, John Dies at the End by David Wong:
That whole bit was something John had come up with, the man having a terrible habit of carrying out his drunken 3:00 A.M. ideas even after daylight and sobriety came. It was always 3:00 A.M. for John.
Such a simple set of sentences that completely capture and define a character. This is someone you know, maybe even someone who you have been. You went to high school with him or her and have fond memories of that one weekend. AND that is why it is such a great sentence, it does not need to say anything more, it lets you fill in all the holes and gives you that space to know this character in.
<addendum by Shiri: this is a very good illustration of where Luke’s sensibilities and mine diverge. He goes for character development. I go for sodomizing bratwurst and occult dabbling dogs.>
