Prediction: Peanuts
Shiri’s Prediction: I have no real attachment to Peanuts. I read the comic strips when there still were such things and they were in the NEWSPAPER on Sunday but I was always more of a Far Side and Calvin and Hobbs girl. I’m sort of ambivalent on a big-screen version of Charlie, Snoopy, et al (yup, that’s me. Ambivalent on Peanuts. Dark world I live in). Maybe if there were a purpose of some sort… The reason for the movie, however, evades me, as does any sort of give a shit. And while I do, frequently and loudly, lament the lack of good kids cartoons these days, I’m not sure resurrecting the Norman Rockwell world of stink lines and bully big sisters is the way to correct the problem.
Luke’s Prediction: It does strike me as odd, to revive a series that most children of today know mostly from insurance commercials, but this looks to be a movie that knows where it is coming from and has a deep and loving respect for the material that came before it.
I grew up reading Peanuts, I remember reading the huge oversized collections in the library and the doctor’s office waiting room (or maybe it was the dentist’s office). And I have always had a love of comic strips. So, seeing this brought to life for a new generation seems like a great idea.
The one problem I have, is that in the longer form Peanuts don’t work. The half hour specials are almost all classics, the christmas and halloween especially. But, the movies, and there are like four of them, are all forgettable to painful. I don’t think it is going to work, sadly.
