Sentenced: Shiri’s 6-8-14 Edition
I am, this week, Sentenced not by a cluster of words, but by an historical fact.
Woodes Rogers, a merchant and privateer, is the man credited with bringing down Blackbeard and his fellow pirates, crushing the democratic republic they had founded in the Bahamas (yes, really. No, I didn’t know that either, but that isn’t the fact that sentenced me). Luke and I will be discussing the book and the story contained therein in an upcoming podcast.
A tidbit I feel simply can’t wait: In 1709, before he ever found himself embroiled with the rogue nation, Rogers was shot in the face during a skirmish at sea. In the face. The musket ball lodged in his palette. Later on in the same battle, a wooden “splinter,” which my nursing judgment tells me was something more like a spear, tore away half of his ankle and the skin over his heel.
He survived.
His ship sailed on to Indonesia.
He survived.
He had surgery to remove the ball and do do what repairs were possible on his face and leg.
He survived.
After which he sailed back to England.
And survived.
Be warned, kids. This is my new standard for badass.
