What is on my audio device this week: Writing Excuses, Season 11
Writing Excuses is both shorter and more dense than most other writing craft related podcasts. They shoot to be 15 minutes long (their tagline is: “Fifteen minutes long, because you are in a hurry, and we are not that smart”) and with four hosts they pack a ton into each episode. They pack a bunch of experience across both genre, webcomics, and all sorts of views. The hosts, Brandon Sanderson, Mary Robinette Kowal, Howard Tayler, and Dan Wells, work as a well-oiled machine, and they have enough clout to pull in some interesting guests.
For their most current season they are exploring what the are calling ‘elemental genres’, which they are defining as ‘the things that make you read. The things that make you turn the page.’ Which is an interesting subject to talk about. Rather than focus on what makes science fiction or fantasy work, but what are the storytelling elements that span genres. Which, in nice 15 minute bite size episodes, makes for some great podcasting. I know I don’t love the term ‘elemental genres’, but I love the discussions.
