What is on my nightstand this week – Luke
Still loving on Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. There is something about a modern influenced epic fantasy setting that I love, might be that I have a project set in a similar type of location. I think of these locations as places where magic rather than (or in addition to) technology has driven things like the industrial revolution. So, a world where it more like the modern world, if it were bases on magic. I tried to explain to my wife how this book was engaging both because of and in spite of at the core the book is about contract law. Fantastic, magical, contract law binding a god to nations and other gods, but contract law none the less. Still, definitely recommended.
I am also reading Fade Out by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (both of Sleeper, Criminal, Fatale fame). The book ended back in january, but I tend to read my comics a bit skewed off of live, and I always carve out extra time for Brubaker Phillips books. One of the great parts of their recent books, one that some other series like Bitch Planet have copied, is that there is both a letters section and a back matter bit. Where there is an essay covering the history of the source material or influences of the book. This means each book takes about twice as long to completely consume satisfactorily. This one is set at a movie studio during the 1940s. So, it is Hollywood at its most Hollywood. And a dark, dark story filled with great, and horrible stories. Highly recommended.
