Shiri’s Top Ten Media Experiences of 2013
Again, in no particular order:
1) Hannibal: Because.
2) Arrow: I admit it, I was ready to quit Oliver Queen and his cohorts, not out of lack of enjoyment but because I was trying to carve out more writing time. At the urging of both Luke and Jon (huh… that looks weird), I binge watched the first half of season two and I am re-hooked. While the few comics I get right now are Marvel, in all other things, I remain a DC girl, including the slow, small screen world building and cross-connecting they have going on. Looking forward to the Flash show now as well.
3) Sleepy Hollow: I have a geek crush on Ichabod Crane. I can’t help it. He can pick up a Glock no problem, but scotch tape confounds him and internet porn makes him blush. Story got a little convoluted, and there were a few slow eps, toward the end of the season (though I believe there may be a couple more still coming), but I’m willing to chalk it up to uncertainty about being picked up, let alone renewed. You have to love a show that jumps the shark/blows up the fridge in the first episode and then forges ahead. First not-sucky pilot I’ve seen in ages. Weekly madness, right to my DVR and the live tweets that go with it are fantastic (if you don’t follow Orlando Jones, you should).
4) Almost Human: Got a little whiplash between the pilot and the second episode due to the drastic shift in tone, but I’m digging it now. I always need to have a police procedural in my line up and since Castle has failed me and Broadchurch is on break (additionally, am admittedly skittish about a second season) this is filling an absolutely desperate need. Also, if Karl Urban and Lily Taylor are involved, I will overlook initial bumps. Good humor in unexpected places and it wins the award for year’s best media dick joke not involving a Congressman.
5) Luther, season 3. Alice is back. That is all.
6) Broadchurch: It’s hard to discuss Broadchurch without falling into the spoiler pit so I shan’t except to say all involved are phenomenal and this is the best of that slow-burn British drama that hasn’t quite made its way here yet. Clear some time before you start this one because you’re going to want to go straight through. Also, I hadn’t seen David Tenant in anything that wasn’t Dr. Who or Shakespeare, so huzzah and the man is a fucking genius.
7) Riff-Trax Live: Jon and I went to three of these events: Starship Troopers, Night of the Living Dead, and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I highly recommend them. They are fun and it’s impossible to think about anything except laughing your ass off for a couple of hours. Arrive early — our theatre was packed all three times and the pre-movie “trivia” is amazing.
8) Ever, Jane: I contributed to the Kickstarter for this online RPG to be released next year. It is a Regency era online RPG. Yep. You read that right.
